High fructose corn syrup has been blamed for being a major cause in the problem of increasing obesity. Here is a very interesting lecture by Dr. Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology. He explores the damage that can be caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.
